The 2024 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry (computational protein design and protein structure prediction) and Physics (the neural-network foundations behind it) marked a turning point: AI is no longer an experimental add-on to biology, it's core infrastructure for finding disease targets, for designing new proteins and enzymes, and for re-engineering the cells that produce them. Multiple AI-designed drug candidates have already cleared FDA IND review and entered clinical trials, with some programs compressing early discovery timelines from an industry average of roughly 4.5 years down to 12–18 months. The same generative and predictive models are now moving into enzyme engineering and strain design for biomanufacturing. The tools driving this shift protein language models, generative sequence and structure design, variant-effect predictors are maturing fast, and the teams adopting them early are the ones setting the pace.
